Celtic Manor Golf Resort
Thursday 30 Sep 2010
When Sir Terry Mathews, the Newport born billionaire, bought Celtic Manor 30 years ago he set about transforming it into a world class sporting venue.
There was a time when he would have been laughed off the course if he had suggested that Europe and America’s golfing greats would be doing battle in a little known part of South East Wales, but from 1st to 3rd of October 2010 that was precisely what happened.
Over the past few years the Celtic Manor Resort has constructed the first purpose designed Ryder Cup golf course and a brand new clubhouse. The impressive Twenty Ten Clubhouse was a fitting venue for the world’s top golfers and is carpeted throughout using custom designed carpets from Newhey Carpets.
The Spike Bar, Pro-shop and the luxurious oak panelled locker rooms are carpeted with Newhey’s heavy contract spike resistant woven Axminster. The specification of this specialist high performance carpet is tough enough to withstand being walked on by golfers wearing spiked shoes yet it is also soft enough to walk on with bare feet and in Padraig Harrington’s case perfect for catching forty winks on during the rain affected first days play.
Newhey’s unique Colortec patterned tufted carpet is used for the Reception, Samuel Ryder Suite, Members Lounge and Rafters Restaurant.
European captain, Colin Montgomerie, was once described, by a USA Ryder Cup player, as one the most daunting opponents he had ever faced. Daunting or not at least both teams were able to kick off their golf shoes and relax after their rounds in the knowledge that they are walking on some of the finest carpets made in the UK.
After the most historic Ryder Cup ever things can now get back to normal for the teams and the thousands of fans that attended the matches, however for your golf club to share the same sense of comfort and quality as The Celtic Manor Resort contact e.norman@newheycarpets.co.uk.
